Southeast Missouri Experiences Blizzard Conditions

Winter Weather
KFVS 12

Southeastern portions of Missouri between West Plains, Farmington and Sikeston have been hit hard with blizzard like conditions.

Learfield News reported that blizzard conditions in Southeast Missouri have caused the state transportation department to call in extra road crews from the Hannibal area to help keep roads open. MODOT spokesman Beth Wright says blowing snow powered by 30-40 MPH gusts are causing whiteout conditions at times. The weather service had forecast snow accumulations of 6-12 inches. Ameren reports about 3,000 people have lost power in Southeast Missouri because of the storm.

In addition, Highway 55 between St. Louis and Cape Giradeau was considered covered by the Missouri Department of Transportation. Road crews have been very busy to uncover those roads to allow travelers to pass through.

The good news is that the snow has cleared the area according to the National Weather Service. However, the winds are still blowing the snow around, creating low visibility, and there is a call for additional snow on late Friday or Saturday according to the National Weather Service. The blizzard warning itself was cancelled at around noon on Dec. 26.

If you have to do some traveling, prepare for the cold temperatures.  Pack an extra blanket or clothes with you in case you get stuck. Double check your spare tire to make sure it is ready in case of emergency, and when you are following vehicles, leave enough space between you and the car in front of you. A chain reaction accident can easily occur in slippery conditions.

I encourage you to check with MoDOT to ensure the roads are clear as possible before venturing out.
