The Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs played hockey in Ann Arbor, Michigan for the 2014 NHL Winter Classic on New Year's Day. This special game is played outdoors in the Big House. For the first time ever, the NHL drew over 100,000 fans into the stadium to watch this game as snow came falling down onto the ice surface during the Winter Classic.

I noticed on Facebook that some people  talking about this game don't even follow hockey. I wonder, what would it take for Missouri to get a game like this to draw attention to hockey in Missouri?

St. Louis could host it. Busch Stadium recently hosted a college football game between Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri and a soccer game between the Argentina National Team and Bosnia-Herzegovina, so it could be a possibility.

If the NHL ever did decide to do this, I would go with St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks. They have always been fierce rivals and would draw pretty well regionally.

Detroit also used the whole week to highlight smaller leagues too. Wouldn't it be fun to see Mizzou take on Illinois in college hockey? The Missouri Mavericks could play the St. Charles Chill, and countless youth leagues could get the chance to play on the ice in Busch Stadium. This would be a great opportunity to highlight hockey and promote the Blues, the NHL more in the Show-Me State. Plus, the alumni games would be great. Who wouldn't like to see Brett Hull, Brendan Shanahan, Al MacInnis, Grant Fuhr and maybe even an appearance by Wayne Gretzky sport the Blues uniform again?
