Sedalia Mayor Pro Tem Rhiannon Foster was the special guest at a meeting of Girl Scout Troop 71052 on Tuesday night at Calvary Baptist Church, 1015 West 16th Street.

The multi-level-aged Troop was focused on government, civics and civic engagement and requested Foster, who is a Fourth Ward Councilwoman, to attend the meeting and present a proclamation.

The 20-member Troop, comprised of students in Kindergarten through seventh grade, each voted in a mock election on Election Day for a Troop Crest image. The choices were a trumpet or a shooting star. Each girl was issued a voter ID card. Shooting Star ultimately won by two votes.

Mayor Pro Tem Foster handed each girl an “I Voted” sticker after they cast their ballot, which they promptly attached to their clothes.

She then answered several questions from the girl scouts about her job on the Council, adding that she is a business owner with two sons.

She then posed for photos and gave each girl a silver key chain with the City of Sedalia logo on it.

The girls also used crayons to color a picture of the Pettis County Courthouse during the government section.

Girl Scout Leader Amanda Harvey said that “We meet every other week for 90 minutes for meetings, plus we do fun activities like camping & field trips at other times. Our troop is not accepting new members but I am happy to mentor a parent or volunteer that is willing to be a new troop leader. We are in need of new volunteers to keep growing and continuing the tradition of Girl Scouts,” Harvey said.

She added that “at all Girl Scout levels there is badge that encourages the understanding of our democracy and government.”

Who knows? Maybe some of these girls will serve as City Council members one day, or possibly mayor of Sedalia.
