Building Collapses at Main and Ohio

The 100 block of West Main in downtown Sedalia is now closed to through traffic after a building at Main & Ohio collapsed just at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday night.

The building was in the process of being torn down and the roof was reportedly removed prior to the collapse.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the building collapse.

Sedalia Police and Sedalia Fire responded to the scene Tuesday night.

Two city building officials were on the scene Wednesday morning shortly after 8 a.m. Assessing the situation.

According to the City of Sedalia:

At approximately 6:45 p.m. on August 25th, the east wall of the building located at 104 W. Main Street collapsed, sending debris into the adjacent parking area and a portion of Ohio Street. City of Sedalia Fire, Police, Public Works, and Community Development personnel responded to the scene and immediately secured the area.

At this time, neighboring buildings do not appear to have sustained damage; however, additional examination will be conducted as appropriate.

The properties at 104, 106, 108, 110, 112, and 114 W. Main were already scheduled for demolition prior to the collapse. The property owners have active demolition permits for each building, and the City previously received an engineered demolition plan addressing the work, including the separation of 114 W. Main Street from the adjoining building at 116 W. Main Street.

Following the collapse, concrete barriers were installed along Main Street at Ohio and Osage streets, and additional barricades were placed in the alley behind the affected properties. Main Street between Ohio Street and Osage Avenue will remain closed until the affected buildings have been rendered safe and the street can be safely reopened.

The property owners, Sedalia Plaza on Main, have agreed to accelerate the demolition because of the current condition of the buildings. The original demolition process was expected to take approximately four to six months. The current estimate is for the buildings at 104-114 W. Main Street to be completely demolished by approximately September 8th, at which time we believe the street can be reopened.

The City will continue to monitor the demolition and provide additional updates as conditions change. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the closed area and observe all barricades and traffic-control measures.
