Fallen Peace Officers Remembered at SPD Ceremony

The Sedalia Police Department observed National Police Week with a Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony Sunday at 5 p.m., in the parking lot of the SPD, 300 West 3rd.

The 20-minute ceremony featured a 21-gun salute by the SPD's Honor Guard and a proclamation by Sedalia Mayor Andrew Dawson.

Rank and file members of the patrol unit, as well as a member of the MSHP, were escorted to their spot on the lot by bagpiper Maryann Marti.

Ashlee Martin sang the National Anthem, and the US flag was raised by the CMPA Color Guard.

SPD Chaplain Deb Galey provided the Benediction and Sedalia Police Chief Matt Wirt placed a large blue and black wreath in honor of those who died in the line of duty over the past 12 months.

This was followed by the playing of Taps by trumpeters Anna Kringle and Sandra Greene.

A reception concluded the solemn event in the SPD's training room, with refreshments, and a slide show featuring those officers who lost their lives while on duty.

In his speech at the 27th annual event, Chief Wirt noted that “we reflect on their sacrifice while serving in one of the noblest occupations in our country. It is during this time, we remember not only the sacrifice these men and women have made, but are reminded of what the law enforcement profession means to each of us. We remember that law enforcement is a crucial element in maintaining our quality of life in the United States. It is the element that separates good from evil, the lawful from the lawless, the fear from the fearful, and finally, the weak from the oppressive.”

A handful of Boy Scouts also attended the ceremony.
