Senior Monique Grant, who won four events on the day, set the Smith-Cotton record in the girls long jump and junior Nate McFail is the new record holder in boys pole vault with their performances May 12 in the Class 5, District 5 track meet at Waynesville.

Grant leaped 19 feet, 1.5 inches, in the long jump, topping teammate Nia Hawkins, a junior, who was second with a jump of 17 feet, 11 inches. Grant (38 feet, 9.75 inches) and Hawkins (35 feet, 9.5 inches) also were 1-2 in the triple jump. Capping her day, Grant was first in the 100 meters (12.0 seconds) and 200 meters (25.44 seconds).

McFail vaulted 14 feet, 6 inches, finishing second in the boys event to earn a slot in the Class 5 sectional meet May 19 at S-C’s Tiger Stadium.

Senior Saige Peterson continued her season-long domination of the girls 800 meters, taking first in 2:24.63.

The top four performers in each event advance to the sectional meet. Other Smith-Cotton athletes moving on to the sectional:

Tyshawn Ward, who was fourth in the boys 200 meters (23.37 seconds) and fourth in the boys 100 meters (11.22 seconds)

The boys 4x100 relay team (Brennan Akeson, Elijah Choate, Yoswal Diaz, Ward), which finished fourth (44.71 seconds)

Alex Beard, who was third in the boys 1600 meters (4:40.75)

Yoana Nandho, who was fourth in the girls 1600 meters (5:52.07)

Viktor Tsymbal, who was third in the boys 110 meter hurdles (15.38 seconds)

The boys 4x800 relay team (Brinton Beard, William Hooton, Irvin Zalpa, Alex Beard) which finished fourth (8:22.08)

Abbey Ahern, who was fourth in the girls discus (88 feet, 2 inches)
