Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins says the newly-introduced “Gateway Card” for St. Louis residents cannot be used as valid form of identification when voting in Missouri.

Hoskins issued a statement on Friday morning, stressing that while the “On The Way With ADA Gateway Card” being issued by the City of St. Louis, “may serve as a valuable municipal identification for St. Louis residents, it does not meet the state's requirements for voter identification. To ensure the integrity of our elections, it's crucial that all voters continue to present an acceptable form of photo ID at the polls."

Metro Transit initiated the program, which allows qualified  ADA paratransit riders to ride MetroLink and MetroBus for free.

It was unclear why anyone thought that a MetroBus card could be used as a form of voting ID. The site does not mention anything about voting, and there no reports of anyone attempting to use the new St. Louis card to vote in an election.

Nonetheless, Secretary of State Hoskins want on to explain that “According to Missouri law, RSMo 115.427, acceptable forms of voter identification include:

*A non-expired Missouri driver's license or non-driver's license;
*A non-expired military ID, including a veteran's ID card;
*A non-expired United States passport; or
*Another photo ID issued by the United States or the state of Missouri which is either not expired or expired after the date of the most recent general election.

Voters who do not possess an acceptable form of identification are still permitted to cast a provisional ballot. The provisional ballot will be counted if the voter returns to the polling place with valid identification during polling hours or if the election authority verifies the individual's identity by comparing their signature to the one on file.”

Actually, the Gateway Card sounds like a pretty good deal to me, if I lived in St. Louis. But please don’t use it at the polls on Election Day. It won’t work.

The next election is scheduled for April 8.
