‘Toy of the Century’ – How Many of You Still Play with LEGO?
As children, several of us played with LEGO products.
The toy has been around for nearly 80 years, having been named “Toy of the Century” twice.
Growing up in the 90s, LEGO was a staple present for birthdays and Christmas. I was never very creative when it came to making anything with the toy, the extent of my ability consisted of snapping two bricks together and calling it a ‘spaceship.’
However, there have been several people who carried their love of LEGO products into adulthood. My little brother, Aaron, is one of them. He started building with LEGO bricks around the age of 3. His love and creativity for the toy spawned some of the most fun and original LEGO creations I’ve ever seen. But that's the beauty of the product, imagination is the only limit.
The LEGO Group was founded by Kirk Kristiansen. The company has passed from father to son and is now owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the founder.
My brother follows a similar example with his son, having a dedicated LEGO room in his house, along with original packaging and instructions stapled to his so-called ‘trophy’ wall. Aaron has managed to pass his love of LEGO on. Its stories like that that have kept the toy thriving since 1932.
According to the company’s website, the name 'LEGO' is an abbreviation of the two Danish words "leg godt", meaning "play well.” My brother and his children definitely live up to that slogan.
I imagine there are several other people who have kept their love for the toy alive and still design and play with LEGO to this day.
How about you? Whether it be young or old, we would love to hear some of your stories and see some of your LEGO creations in the comment section on Facebook.
