Missouri Just Issued a Stern Warning of Black Bears on the Prowl
In Missouri, we never cease to be excited about the weather warming up and getting back into the wild to do Missourian things. The state has just issued a word of caution about the apex predator that is more common in our woods than ever - black bears who are now on the prowl.
The Missouri Department of Conservation has just shared a bulletin alerting those in the outdoors that they are now not alone in the backcountry. The words of warning come from MDC Furbearer Biologist Nate Bowersock.
“As black bears become active in the spring, they are on a mission to find food,” said Bowersock. “Keeping areas free of food attractants and letting bears find natural foods is in everyone’s best interest. If you see a bear, let the animal be and enjoy the sighting, but be sure to not offer it any food.”
He warns that you should avoid doing any of the following things:
- Do NOT leave food supplies or garbage outside your tent or home if you are in bear country
- Make sure you clean your grills thoroughly
- Pet food should not be left outside
- Do not put a bird-feeder outside of your home if you live near bears
What do you do if you see a black bear in Missouri?
If you are hiking, make noise so you don't surprise a bear - a startled bear is a dangerous bear. If you see a bear, make noise to alert the animal to your presence and slowly back away giving the animal room. Do NOT turn your back and NEVER run. That would make you appear as prey and would not end well for you or the bear.
It's also important to keep your dogs on a leash if they're hiking with you in bear country. Be watchful for signs of bears like tracks or scat. If you see fresh scat, walk the other direction and make sure to make your presence known.
