I don't mean to sound so anti-social, but the best lakes in Missouri are the ones that have the least people at them. That's why I've gone on a quest to find the best places with water in Missouri, but without the popularity that brings the bigger crowds.

It's not easy to find data about the number of visitors to lakes in Missouri, but here's my best effort to help you discover the ones that don't come up often in online searches or reviews on Trip Advisor. These are your best bet for enjoying a quiet day at the lake without having to rub elbows with hundreds of others trying to do the same.

Pomme de Terre Lake

Pomme de Terre in central Missouri has clear water, quiet coves, and outstanding bass and crappie fishing without a lot of boats which translates into less noise and nuisance.

Stockton Lake

Stockton Lake attracts far fewer visitors than nearby Table Rock or Lake of the Ozarks plus it has scenic limestone bluffs and is a great location for paddleboarding, sailing and other less noisy water recreation activities.

Clearwater Lake

Clearwater Lake is called a "pristine wilderness lake" by the US Army Corp of Engineers. It's known for:

  • Beautiful Ozark scenery
  • Quiet coves
  • Excellent boating
  • Family-friendly campgrounds

Mozingo Lake

Mozingo Lake is just a hop, skip and a jump from Maryville. There's a nearby championship golf course plus it's an epic place for birdwatching, camping, fishing and kayaking.

Fellows Lake near Springfield has tons of non-motorized hiking trails, playgrounds and is well-known for kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and peaceful fishing.
