Judge Prepares to Sentence Missouri al-Qaida Supporter

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal judge in Kansas City has given prosecutors until July 31 to file a motion recommending a sentence for a Kansas City man accused of supporting al-Qaida.

The order filed by District Judge Howard Sachs on Wednesday notes that 34-year-old Khalid Ouazzani has been in custody since his plea more than two years ago.

Ouazzani is a married father of two who became a U.S. citizen in June 2006. He pleaded guilty in May 2010 to bank fraud, money laundering and conspiracy to support a terrorist group after admitting he gave money to al-Qaida. He also acknowledged swearing an oath of allegiance to the terror network in 2008.

Sachs says in his order that "prompt sentencing now seems appropriate, absent a further request for delay by the parties."
