Lady Grems Battle Sweet Springs For The Win
The Lady Gremlins went five sets against Sweet Springs, losing the first two sets (28-30, 21-25), but battled back to win the next three sets to give the Grems the win (25-17, 25-17, 15-10) on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
It was a long and late night of Volleyball, but this young Gremlin team really battled back to get the win after losing the first two sets.
It was a back-and-forth night with lots of long rallies. The Gremlins had over 60 digs and almost 150 swings at the net. They didn't give up; they wanted this win. In the third set a free ball was sent right over the net to the Greyhounds middle hitter, but a big block by Captain Avery Epple really changed the momentum of the game giving the Gremlins a big boost, firing up the energy on the Gremlin side of the court.
From there the Lady Gremlins took the lead and kept pushing point by point, staying aggressive and focused. Captain Avery Epple had a big night leading the team with four blocks, 21 digs, eight kills out of 10 attempts, and a career high of 48 assists.
Thirty-five of those assists came from Freshman duo Addie Figgie with 18 kills and Ava Judd 17 kills. Mariah Armstrong and Bailee Vogel both had nine kills, and Emilee Jackson contributed eight at the net. Defensively we saw a lot of action, Figgie had 17 digs and Birkli Martin 16.
“Behind the serving line the Lady Grems were focused and strong, only missing five out of 116 serves. It was a night of long rallies and both sides of the net had little errors, you really had to earn your points and the Lady Gremlins did just that to get the WIN!” said Coach Epple.
JV accomplished a win in three sets against the Lady Groundhounds (25-17, 21-25, 25-17) in a well-rounded team effort all across the board. From the serving line Molly Brown led with 15 serves and Maggie Van Leer led with five aces. Offensively, Kieran Cahill led the team with eight assists, Ebrinn Cahill had 5 kills, both Brown and Van Leer contributed four each. Emily Tienda led the Gremlins defensively once again and really kept her teammates upbeat to help succeed the win.
