A 36-year-old man is accused of assaulting his wife and holding her hostage in their Lincoln County home for more than five weeks.

Richard Penrod was charged Wednesday with felonious restraint, armed criminal action and two counts of domestic assault. It wasn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.

Authorities say Penrod became angry with his wife Sept. 3 after she refused to have sex with him. Police say the suspect assaulted her and pointed a rifle at her and their 6-year-old son. Authorities say Penrod kept the victim inside their home and stopped her from calling police by breaking her cellphone.

Lt. Andy Binder says the victim wasn't physically restrained, but managed to leave with her son Saturday after a friend arranged to pick them up while Penrod was away.
