Authorities say an off-duty officer has shot and wounded a Missouri man after a traffic crash was narrowly avoided.

KRCG-TV reports that the shooting happened Thursday night. The Callaway County sheriff's office says in a news release that an all-terrain vehicle driver nearly hit another vehicle that an off-duty Fulton police officer was driving.

Authorities say the officer shot the ATV driver after he stopped, confronted and physically assaulted the officer. The ATV driver was taken to a Columbia hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His name wasn't immediately released.

The Callaway County sheriff's office says the case will be referred to the prosecuting attorney with requested charges of driving while intoxicated, assault on a law enforcement officer, and other traffic offenses.

An investigation is ongoing.
