Five local track and field athletes have qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics, which are set for July 30 to Aug. 6 in North Carolina.

The Sedalia Speed team members competed in the Region 16 meet on June 23-26 in Carl Junction. More than 2,000 athletes from Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas participated, with many events having more than 50 competitors.

Derek Grubb took first place in the age 17-18 boys 110-meter hurdles. Josiah Marimon finished third in the age 10 boys turbo javelin event.

Finishing in fourth place in their events were Matthew Sharp in the age 14 boys discus and Addison Washington in both the age 14 girls shot put and discus. Tyler Shelledy captured fifth place in age 9 boys turbo javelin.
