If you are a St Louis Cardinals fan, today is a day that should make you happy.  For starters, you got an All Star catcher and World Series winning, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award winner to replace your outgoing, Hall of Fame catcher, Yadier Molina.  As a bonus, you hurt your arch rivals in the process.  Bonus Bonus!

According to Jeff Passan with ESPN, Willson Contreras and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed on a five-year, $87.5 million contract.

Willson Contreras became a free agent this offseason after playing with the Chicago Cubs since 2016. Contreras signed with the Chicago Cubs as an international free agent in 2009 and worked his way up through summer and minor league teams.

Now as a Chicago Cubs fan all of my live, I will tell you why this bothers me so much.  We basically let this young, talented player leave for nothing.  We could have traded him, and gotten something back.  It didn't happen.  He wanted to be a Cub for life, like Yadier Molina was a Cardinal for his career.

The longtime catcher of the Chicago Cubs owns a lifetime OPS of .808 and produced an .815 OPS while slugging 22 home runs last season with Chicago. Contreras has a career on-base percentage of .349 and has cleared the 20-home run benchmark in four of his last five non-COVID-shortened seasons.  You can read more HERE.

St Louis Cardinal fans, you are getting a player who can produce for you on offense and is a solid defensive catcher with a cannon for an arm.  He is a passionate player, and he may not be as good as Yadier, but you will love the passion he brings to the game. And when he beats the Cubs, you can cheer even louder.  As a Cub fan, seeing him sign with our arch rival, this hurts.  A lot.  But I wish him well.  He helped break the 108 year old curse.  Thank you Willson.  Good luck.
