Police Officer And Process Server Killed In Independence Shooting
Multiple television stations out of Kansas City including KSHB 41 are reporting that a civil process server and an Independence Police Officer were killed Thursday afternoon during a shooting in Independence.
Police were called at 1:09 PM to a residence in the 1100 block of North Elsea Smith and Bundschu Road in Independence to help civil process servers from the Jackson County Circuit Court after one was shot while serving legal documents.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol told KSHB that there were multiple process servers at the residence, but only one was shot.
Independence Police Chief Adam Dustman told KSHB that arriving officers went to help the injured process server. Dustman told KSHB, “They found a male down at the address and went in to render aid and extract the victim that they found.”
Dustman confirmed to KSHB that Officer Cody Allen was killed, while Fox 4 is reporting Jude Jalilah Otto identified the process server who was killed as Drexel Mack.
Fox 4 says Mack had served the court for 12 years and was in his 40s, while Allen had served with multiple police departments and worked for Independence PD for about two years. Allen is survived by his wife and two young children.
Multiple television stations are reporting that two other officers were shot and wounded in the altercation.
Fox 4 is reporting that after Independence Police came under fire they called for more backup and a tactical response team and officers from multiple agencies were sent to the scene.
As of 5:30 PM CST police are in the midst of a standoff in the event there is still someone in the house.
The shooting suspect has not been identified but is in custody.
