Fatal accident reported in Pettis County Tuesday afternoon

At 3:25 Tuesday afternoon, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a two-vehicle fatality accident that occurred on US-65 Highway at Route “D” in Pettis County. The accident happened as both vehicles were Southbound on 65 Highway.  A 1998 Peterbilt Tractor Trailer driven by 77-year-old Frank Higgins of Sweet Springs was reportedly making a right turn onto “D” when the Coachman RV driven by 64-year-old George Martin of Wilmington North Carolina overtook and struck the Peterbilt. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene by Pettis County Coroner Robert Smith and his body was taken to Heckart Funeral Home here in Sedalia. A passenger in the RV, 60-year-old Joan Martin of Wilmington, NC, received moderate injuries and was transported to Bothwell Regional Health Center for treatment.  There was no mention of injuries to Higgins. Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.

 

Medicine reported stolen from a mailbox in the 1000 block of West 3rd

Just before 11:00 this morning, Sedalia police took a theft complaint from a victim in the 1000 block of West 3rd. According to the victim sometime between 8:00, and 10:00 this morning, someone removed a package of medicine from his mailbox. The victim said the post office had confirmed the delivery of a package, which he said contained 90 hydrocodone pills. There were no suspects at news time.

 

Thieves cause damage to a vehicle while stealing stereo equipment

Around 7:30 Tuesday night, Sedalia police responded to the area of 3rd and Thompson Avenue on theft and property damage complaints. Upon arrival, the victim told officers thieves had broken a window of his vehicle and caused other damage to gain access to the trunk in order to steal a stereo subwoofer and an amp. The victim estimated the damage at $225, and the value of the stolen items at $350. There were no suspects at the time of the police report.

 

A victim in the 1200 block of East 4th reported his debit card had been accessed, and $400 in fraudulent withdrawals were made from his account sometime during the last month. There are no suspects.

Around 5:00 Tuesday evening Pettis County Sheriff’s Deputies recovered a stolen vehicle stolen out of Johnson County in the 19000 block of Whitfield Road. There is a suspect in the theft.

A bicycle was recovered from a ditch on 32nd Street near Oak Brook Drive by Pettis County deputies Monday morning.
