On the evening of Sunday, Jan. 13 at 6:03 P.M., Clinton Police assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested 51-year-old Denis Murl Stump of Clinton for 24 hour investigation of 1st Degree Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

According to the police report, officers were on the scene of a disturbance in the 600 block of West Franklin Street, when the officers were confronted by a man with a gun.  The officers were standing in the front yard of a residence when a man emerged from a residence across the street and began yelling across the street asking what they were doing.

The officers identified themselves as police officers and shined their flashlights in his direction.  One of the officers asked what the subject was holding in his hand and he responded in a belligerent and threatening manner stating that it was a .45 pistol.  He then pointed the weapon at the officers.

As the officers drew their service weapons the man retreated inside of the house.  He then re-emerged without the pistol in his hand, but refused to follow the officer's verbal commands.  When he attempted to re-enter the home, he was shot with a Taser, placed under arrest and handcuffed.  The subject's .45 handgun and many other weapons were recovered inside of his residence.

Mr. Stump was incarcerated in the Henry County Detention Center.
