Judd Apatow has already conquered film, television and the printed page, so naturally the funnyman is looking to expand his horizons. So Apatow is prepared to do what an actor in his situation would do: head to Broadway!

Apatow revealed his plans to GQ in an extensive interview, most of which revolves around the writer-director's latest film, 'This is 40'. While he's hesitant to dish out any details about the plot, Apatow does indicate that the play will be quite unlike anything else we've seen from him.

I have a great idea. Maybe like the best idea I've ever had... It requires me to create characters and situations that have absolutely nothing to do with my experience... I am excited to write something which has a social conscience.

GQ notes that the play will be unlike anything he's tackled before, calling it complicated, relevant and political. "It's about victims of the criminal-justice system and the challenges they face," Apatow tells the magazine. Also unlike most of his work, the play will not have an autobiographical streak.

When asked if it'll be funny, Apatow responds, "I think it will. But it might stop being funny."

Just as the movie star often wants to test their mettle on the stage, the comic often strives to do something "serious," so it looks like Apatow could attempt to kill two birds with one stone with his planned sojourn to Broadway. Hopefully we'll learn more about Judd's new project in the near future.
