Sedalia Police and Pettis County Sheriff’s Report: Morning of June 28, 2012

Pettis County Fire Fighters were called to a structure fire to the wooden-decked low water crossing on South Grand Avenue, approximately 1/2 mile north of Anderson School Road Wednesday evening. A large amount of spent fireworks were observed at the location, leading to the possibility of the fire being ignited by citizen carelessness. The Pettis County Highway Department has closed the road and placed barriers on both approaches to the bridge due to the structure damage resulting from the fire. Motorists need to plan alternate routes for detour.

Sedalia Police Commander Larry Ward issued a reminder that with July 4th around the corner, they would like to remind those living in Sedalia that discharging fireworks within the city limits of Sedalia is against the law. Violating section 36-123 can result in a summons with subsequent fine along with confiscation of fireworks. With the excessive heat warning in effect, the possibility of starting an accidental fire is greatly increased during these conditions. Sedalia Police is asking Sedalia residents to adhere to the laws regarding discharge of fireworks within the Sedalia city limits.
