A 3K Run/Walk benefitting local autism spectrum families, was held in front of Wild Jade Boutique, 106 W. 5th Street, Saturday morning.

Several walkers/runners showed up, despite the cold. Proceeds go to a local autism support group, Stepping Stones, a non-profit organized in 2017.

The event was organized by United Way of Pettis County, Wild Jade Boutique, Sedalia Parks & Rec, and Retrieving Freedom. A pancake breakfast followed the walk.

First Ward Councilman Tom Oldham told KSIS close to 100 walkers signed up for the event, which also included several vendors and resource tables inside the Liberty Center.

The City of Sedalia was proclaimed an autism-friendly city in August of 2020. And April is Autism Awareness Month.

Oldham noted that Retrieving Freedom helps not only Veterans suffering from PTSD, but also Autism patients. He said that 3.5 million Americans currently live with Autism.

The Autism Walk on Saturday was the third such event in Sedalia, but a first for United Way of Pettis County as an event organizer.

Oldham said he hopes to keep the Autism awareness momentum going with future events like this one.
