The Daum Museum of Contemporary Art on the State Fair Community College Sedalia campus will sponsor the 12th annual “Daum Escape” arts education program for area elementary and secondary students October 17th through December 16th at the museum.

Thousands of students and teachers have benefited from this free program since it was first offered.

During the Daum Escape, area students and teachers arrive at 10 a.m. and participate in an hour-long, docent-led tour of current exhibitions. Students receive art-related information and education materials about the museum’s exhibitions and Sedalia.

Vicki Weaver, the curator of education, said the Daum Escape exposes students to contemporary art and gives teachers information to help them incorporate arts education into their history, language arts, science, and social studies curricula.

To prepare for the event, the museum will present a free Daum Escape Professional Development and Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) Practicum for teachers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. October 13th at the museum. VTS is an innovative, student-centered and research-based teaching method.

Teachers will receive coaching in VTS techniques through direct participation. They also will receive curriculum guides and hands-on activities so they can return to the classroom and familiarize students with the VTS process they will encounter at the museum during their visit.

Lunch will be served in the museum to all participating teachers. Registration for the professional development day is requested by October. 7 but late registration will be accepted until the workshop is full.

‘Daum Escape’ is free, and limited funds may be available to help with transportation costs. Please call the museum at 660-530-5888 for more details.
