On Jan. 21, The Pettis County Sheriff's Office, via Sheriff Brad Anders, released a statement concerning the death of a Pettis County inmate that occurred on Aug. 20.

“On Aug. 20 at around 3 a.m., inmate Calvin H. Young contacted jail staff with a complaint of difficulty breathing. Corrections officers responded immediately and moved Young to medical, at which time PCAD was summoned to the scene.

Shortly after the arrival of PCAD, Young was walked to an awaiting stretcher and was taken to the ambulance, where he succumed to his (at the time) unknown illness.

At this time, Pettis County Coroner Skip Smith conducted an initial investigation, and the body of Young was relinquished to the Boone County Medical Examiner's Office.

On Aug. 27, a postmortem exam was performed by Dr. Keith N. Norton at the Boone-Callaway County Medical Examiner's Office. No injuries were identified during the examination, but Dr. Norton's findings indicate that Young was positive for COVID-19. As such, Dr. Norton ruled the cause of death as COVID-19.”

The Pettis County Sheriff's Office expressed their deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Young, and were truly saddened by his passing.
