The Sedalia Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) has announced the hiring of Gary Edwards as its new executive director.

Edwards will officially begin his role on April 15, 2026, and will work alongside current Executive Director Carolyn Crooker through a transition period ahead of her retirement on July 1, 2026.

Edwards brings more than 30 years of leadership experience as a City Manager and City Administrator in communities across three states. While he is stepping away from municipal management, Edwards emphasized his commitment to continued public service and community engagement.

“I don’t anticipate ever fully retiring,” said Edwards. “Staying actively involved in the community has always been important to me, and I’m excited to bring my experience and passion to the Sedalia CVB.”

Edwards has deep and longstanding ties to Sedalia. He first moved to the community as a News Director for a local radio station and has maintained strong connections ever since. Over the years, he has served as Sedalia City Administrator, worked on Capitol Hill as a Chief of Staff and Communications Director, and held leadership roles at the state level, including serving a Missouri Lt. Governor.

His professional background also includes extensive experience in media and public relations. Edwards is an award-winning broadcast news director and former owner of a media company that produced political radio advertising across Missouri. He and his wife, Catherine, have also produced several local history documentaries, including a feature on Harry Truman’s ties to Sedalia. Media relations, communications strategy and public engagement have remained central to his work throughout his career.

In addition to his communications expertise, Edwards has demonstrated strong leadership in complex environments. Notably, while serving as City Manager in Aransas Pass, Texas, he led recovery efforts following the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey, navigating significant regulatory and operational challenges to help guide the community forward.

Edwards holds a Master of Public Administration from Missouri State University and has pursued additional studies in communications, municipal government, and legislative affairs. He is a Vietnam veteran and, along with his wife, an avid bicyclist. The couple has five grown children and maintains a historic home in Sedalia, where they have strong family ties.

“Gary’s experience, leadership, and deep connection to Sedalia make him an outstanding choice to lead the CVB into the future,” said CVB President Kyle Herrick.

“I look forward to working with him during this transition and am confident the organization will continue to thrive under his leadership.” Said Crooker
