10 Missouri Counties With Elevated Mosquito Activity
The mosquito struggle is real in Missouri every year at this time, but this season seems to be especially problematic. There are nearly a dozen counties across the state that are reporting higher than usual amounts of mosquito activity as the weather warms up now.
Here are the parts of Missouri that mosquitos love and thrive in:
- Large rivers and floodplains
- Recent heavy rainfall
- Wetlands, lakes, and reservoirs
- High humidity
- Dense urban populations where mosquito surveillance often detects activity
That's why these 10 Missouri counties are seeing more annoying mosquito activity than other parts of the state:
- St. Louis County
- Jackson County
- St. Charles County
- Clay County
- Platte County
- Boone County
- Greene County
- Cole County
- Jasper County
- Camden County
St. Louis County is notorious for having several places where storm water collects which makes for an ideal habitat for mosquitos. St. Charles County has the nearby Missouri River which is also a factor for Platte and Cole County, too. Camden County has vast areas of shoreline which makes mosquito activity a constant warm weather issue.
How can you lessen the chance that you'll be bitten by mosquitos?
There are colors of clothing that really do make a difference when it comes to avoiding mosquito attractions. These pests hate white, green, blue, and pastel/earth tones like beige, khaki, and soft gray. Studies have shown they look for heat-absorbing darker colors or high contrast tones.
