Kansas City police say a middle school student suffered life-threatening injuries after being stabbed at school.

The stabbing occurred Tuesday morning in a bathroom at Northeast Middle School. Police spokeswoman Donna Drake says another student was detained after the stabbing. Both students are male.

Drake says the two students had some type of confrontation but the motive for the stabbing is still being investigated. The school teaches seventh and eighth-grade students.

Drake says there is no ongoing threat.

The school planned to close for the day.
