Visitors, staff and students walking through the hallway just outside the Goddard Gallery on the SFCC campus will soon see a brand-new work of art hanging above them in the Stauffacher Building.

“Relay” by Leticia Bajuyo is being worked on right now on the floor by at least a half dozen people, including her assistant and several SFCC art students, and is expected to be completed by 6 p.m. Thursday. That’s when an artist reception is scheduled to be held. Bajuyo has been at SFCC since Monday.

Bajuyo estimated the final piece will be about 60 feet long and be suspended near the ceiling by steel cables. If you happen to miss the reception Thursday night, that’s alright, because the artwork should remain in place for the next year.

The artwork is comprised of thousands of discarded CDs and DVDs that have been donated to Bajuyo in support of her artistic endeavors.

Four tiny holes have been drilled though each disc, and high-tension fishing line has been threaded through each one to form colorful, layered sections that are then attached to a cylindrical, aluminum frame that will ultimately hang from the ceiling.

Bajuyo is an assistant professor of sculpture art instructor at the University of Oklahoma and met Daum Museum Director Garry Holstein at Hanover College in Indiana a few years ago.

Her website is leticiabajuyo.com.

Leticia Bajuyo will be in attendance Thursday evening at the members reception, and will speak briefly about her installation.

A guest exhibition c9: Contemporary Printmaking, and Inhabit, will also be on display at the Daum.

While you’re at the Goddard Gallery, be sure to check out all the artwork created by SFCC art students. An art reception was held for them last week.

And of course the Daum Museum is open 11-5 Tuesday through Friday, and 1-5 p.m., on the weekends. Call  (660) 530-5888 for more information.
