On Thursday, Oct. 1 at 11:05 p.m., Pettis County deputies were conducting surveillance on a residence in the 300 block of East Pine in La Monte on a subject with an active warrant for his arrest.

A deputy assigned to the La Monte and Green Ridge area noticed the vehicle the suspect is known to drive had left the area. Deputies later located the vehicle on US 50, just east of MM Highway.

The driver of the vehicle, Wilburn Barnett, attempted to strike a vehicle traveling next to him, according to a report.

Deputies then attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle and Barnett took off, prompting a pursuit in the western part of the county , then back into the La Monte city limits.

Barnett then drove his vehicle head-on into a handrail at the La Monte Post Office, then exited the vehicle and ran away on foot.

Deputies caught up with Barnett and placed him into custody after a brief struggle. During the struggle, Barnett allegedly assaulted a deputy.

Several pills were found to be in Barnett's possession.

Deputies requested felony charges of possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, assault on a law enforcement officer and 2nd degree property damage. Barnett was also wanted on two Pettis County warrants.
