Mosquitoes or flies bugging you? If you live in Sedalia the city will be spraying for mosquito and fly abatement after Labor Day. This according to a post on their Facebook page. That's great, but how can you keep your Labor Day celebration on the patio or in the backyard pest free?

Doityourself.com has some tips:

  • Burn Citrus or Citronella. Put citrus candles on surfaces like tables and benches and burn Citronella in Tiki-Torches around the perimeter of your patio and you'll keep mosquitoes and flies at bay.
  • Spray the perimeter and the surfaces of your patio with a light mist of a Hydrogen Peroxide and water solution. (Fill a spray bottle with 1/3 Hydrogen Peroxide and the rest with water. Shake well.)
  • Spray patio surfaces with a mixture of Anise Oil and water. (Anise Oil is very strong, you only need a few drops in the water. Must be real Anise Oil, not artificial.)
  • Replace white outdoor lights with yellow lights or sodium vapor lights. These lights are less likely to attract bugs.

These to me seem to be the easiest ideas to implement from the article, although there are some other ideas as well. You can check out the full article here.

I think I may check out the Hydrogen Peroxide and water solution and spray that on the front porch, along with changing the porch light to a yellow bulb. While mosquitoes haven't really bugged me, I'd like to generally keep the bug population around my front door down.
