Post Holiday Shopping Is Looking Pretty Good In January

I admit, I'm not much of a shopper. Unless it's like, grocery shopping. I don't really like to buy things for myself, unless it's some asparagus or something.

But, some of you are. I see you out there on social media, getting deals and finding sales.  So I thought I'd do a little research and find out what typically goes on sale after the holiday season.  And you might have a little extra time after the new year, so why not (if that's your thing)?

So typically there are lots of things that go on sale, but I narrowed it down to just five things, or we'd be here forever.  Here's a quick look at some stuff that's typically reduced in price in January.

1. Toys, because the holidays are over. So you might want to do some shopping early if your kid has a birthday coming up soon.  Or if you're like me, and you got cousins and nieces and nephews and all that.

2. Exercise equipment, specifically treadmills and elliptical machines. Stores want to clear them out so they can get new ones in.  You know, the latest model of treadmill with a huge tv screen or dynamic walking technology or something. And, a lot of people make resolutions to lose weight, so they're extra motivated to get em out of the stores.

3. Televisions. Historically, they're cheaper in January than any other month.  Why? It's just like the exercise equipment. The Consumer Electronics Show is in January, and that's where the new models are introduced.  They tend to ship out in the spring, and so the retailers want to get rid of the old ones to make room for the new ones.

4. Winter clothes. Stores have to start making room for all their spring stuff. So maybe you can stock up on a sweater or two.

5. Bedding, specifically sheets. They're always on sale in January. It dates back to 1878, when the owner of a department store in Philadelphia did it.  He called it a "white sale" because most bedding was just white at the time.  It was supposed to be symbolic of white being a "fresh start" for the year.  Dude was a genius.  He was also the guy that invented the price tag and invented the idea of returnable goods.  John Wanamaker, look him up on Wikipedia.  Wild ride.
