Second Man Charged in Shooting Death at Independence Apartment

A second man has been charged in a shooting that killed a woman and wounded a man in an Independence apartment.

The Kansas City Star reports that 20-year-old Michael Lora, of Blue Springs, was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder, assault and armed criminal action in the death of Mary Schmitz. Bond is set at $500,000. No attorney is listed for him in online court records.

Prosecutors also have charged 18-year-old David Harris,of Oak Grove in the shootings. Court documents say police responded to a call of shots fired and arrived to hear yelling inside. Two women and a man came out of the apartment and officers went inside to find Schmitz and a German Shepherd dead in a living room area. The other victim was wounded in the bedroom.
