Sedalia Police Reports For July 12, 2021

Sunday evening, Officers responded to the 1400 block of South Prospect Avenue in reference to a theft. A subject at the scene was arrested for a Parole Violation warrant. Matthew W. Jones, 40, Homeless, was transported to the Pettis County Jail with no bond.

Officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Ruth Ann Drive Sunday evening in response to a domestic disturbance. Officers spoke with a male and a female, with conflicting stories of about who hit who. Neither subject had physical injuries. A primary physical aggressor could not be determined. A 12 hour log was completed to document the incident.

Sedalia Police responded to the 500 block of West 5th Street for a report of theft Sunday evening. Jose Herrera reported the catalytic converter to his vehicle had been stolen around July 2nd. A theft report was made with the part estimated to cost $800.

Sunday night, Sedalia Police performed a traffic stop on a gray Chrysler passenger car as the vehicle did not have any license plates. The traffic stop took place in the area of West 16th Street and South Limit Avenue. Officers spoke to the driver and then performed a computer check through Dispatch. The driver had an active Failure to Appear warrant out of Benton County on original charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Maintaining Financial Responsibility. Arrangements were made to transport Jeffery Raymond Shields, 32, of Warrensburg, to the Pettis County/Benton County line, where he was released to the custody of a Lincoln Police Officer. Bond for Shields was set at $300 cash only, and his court date is to be determined.

On Thursday, July 1st, Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of East 18th Street in regard to a disturbance with weapons. Upon arrival, the victim stated the suspect had thrown a brick at their vehicle and had raised it in a threatening manner. The victim estimated the damage would cost $1000 to repair. On the afternoon of Sunday, July 11th, Officers located the subject and they admitted to causing the damage. They stated they threw the brick at the victim, and it bounced off of them onto the vehicle, causing the damage. Tiffiney D. Proctor, 38, of Sedalia, was arrested for Property Damage in the 1st Degree and Domestic Assault in the 4th Degree.

Early Sunday morning, Officers responded to the BRHC Emergency Room, 601 East 14th Street, for a suspicious person looking into vehicles. Contact was made with the suspect, who was issued a trespass warning from the hospital. The suspect was searched and was found to have methamphetamine, Tramadol, and marijuana on her person. Tina M. Hendrix, 53, of Warsaw, was arrested and transported to the Pettis County Jail to be booked on a 24 hour hold, pending charges of Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Marijuana.

Sedalia Police conducted a vehicle stop near the intersection of West 5th Street and South Grand Avenue Sunday morning for speeding. Michael S. Anderson, 39, of Sedalia, was arrested for Driving While Suspended and Driving While Intoxicated (Prior Offender). Anderson was transported to the Pettis County Jail to be booked and released to a sober driver.

Officers responded to the Econolodge, 3501 West Broadway Boulevard, in reference to a 911 call early Sunday morning. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that an employee of the motel was assaulted by a patron. Jay John, 25, of Sedalia, was located and arrested for Assault in the 3rd Degree. John was transported to the Pettis County Jail to be booked and released.

Officers initiated a traffic stop on a car for disobeying a red light near North Ohio Avenue and East Jefferson Street Sunday morning. Officers determined the driver was intoxicated. Jose de Jesus Sotelo, 42, of Sedalia, was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and booked into the Pettis County Jail to be released to a sober party.

Sunday afternoon, Sedalia Police responded to the Wolfy's Barber Shop, 520 West Broadway Boulevard, for a trespassing in progress. On arrival, the suspect had already left the area after being forcefully removed from inside the closed business. The suspect was located a a nearby business. Caleb W. Hinshaw, 25, of Sedalia, transported to the BRHC for treatment of injuries. Charges of Trespassing in the 1st Degree are being requested to the prosecutor.

Saturday morning, Officers responded to the 600 block of South New York Avenue for a theft report. On arrival, Officers met with Corbett R. Martin, who stated he paid a contractor $10,000 in April to work on his house. The work was never completed, and the contractor can no longer be reached. A report has been completed to document the incident.

Officers were dispatched to a traffic complaint in the area of West Broadway and South Limit Avenue Sunday afternoon. A male was in the middle of the intersection causing traffic issues. Jason Bryan Warren, 43, of Sedalia, was found to be not in a right state of mind and placed on a 12 hour protective custody hold.

Sedalia Police were dispatched to the 1000 block of South State Fair Boulevard for a report of a deceased person Sunday afternoon. The victim was identified and pronounced deceased on arrival. The Pettis County Coroner was contacted and the body was collected.

Saturday morning, Officers were dispatched for mutual assistance for Pettis County Deputies. A vehicle had been stolen from the 200 block of Tori Lane. That same vehicle was used in a theft in the 600 block of South Marshall Avenue. The suspects entered the property through the 600 block of South Harding. The suspects are unknown at this time.

On the afternoon of July 9th, Officers investigated a disturbance in the 600 block of East 10th Street where a weapon was displayed. After investigation, it was determined the disturbance was verbal, actions were perceived as aggressive, and a participant showed they had a weapon to defend themselves if necessary. No arrest was made. A general information report was made to document the incident.

Saturday morning, Officers were dispatched to the Walgreen's store, 801 South Limit Avenue, for a theft. An unknown suspect took vitamins from the business and then fled when confronted by management. They have not been located at this time.

Sedalia Police responded to the Police Station lobby, 300 West 3rd Street, for a found property report Saturday morning. Officers met with Robert D. Schell, who had found a set of keys in the alley behind his house in the 1800 block of East 7th Street. The keys were collected and placed into evidence as found property. A report was completed for documentation purposes.

Friday morning, Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of West 16th Street for a report of identity theft. When Officers arrived, they spoke with David E. Bougher, who stated that sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning, someone gained access to his bank account and took $698. A person was named as a possible suspect, but at the time of the report they were not located for questioning. There are no other suspects at this time.

Saturday afternoon, Officers were flagged down by Jason Fox in the 200 block of North Harding Avenue. Property was found on Fox's land that did not belong to him. It was secured into evidence.

Friday evening, Sedalia Police were dispatched to the 700 block of Winchester Drive in regard to an accident which had just occurred. In the course of working the scene, it was found that one of the drivers did not have a valid license or insurance. Andres Navarro-Garcia, 23, of Sedalia, was arrested and transported to the Pettis County Jail where he was booked and released for Driving Without a Valid License and Failure to Provide Proof of Insurance.

Early Sunday morning, Officers made contact with Heather S. Bentrup in the Sedalia Police Department lobby for a report of harassment. Bentrup claimed to have received threatening messages from a person known to her. She did not wish to pursue charges at this time, so a documentation report was generated.

Sedalia Police were dispatched to the 500 block of North Moniteau Avenue for a report of a disturbance with weapons Sunday morning. Following an investigation, one subject was arrested for Domestic Assault in the 4th Degree after evidence indicated he pulled a knife and threatened his brother. Terrance J. Cooper, 43, of Sedalia, was transported to the Pettis County Jail, where he was placed on a 24 hour hold pending the filing of charges.

Saturday night, Officers initiated an investigative traffic stop on a car in the area of North Ohio Avenue and East Pacific Street because the registered owner had an arrest warrant. A check through Dispatch confirmed the driver was the owner, and she had an active Jefferson City warrant for Delivery/Possession of a Controlled Substance into a Jail Facility with no bond. Amy R. Wright, 33, of Sedalia, was arrested and transported to the Pettis County Jail to be booked on the warrant.

Officers initiated a vehicle stop in the 800 block of West Broadway Boulevard Saturday night. The driver had an active Failure to Appear warrant out of Cooper County for Speeding. Michael J. Mayes, 28, of Sedalia, was arrested and transported to the Pettis County Jail with a bond set at $150 cash only.

Early Saturday morning, Sedalia Police observed a car northbound on Harrison from West 3rd Street. It failed to signal a turn onto westbound West 2nd Street and Officers observed it had no plate lights. Officers initiated a traffic stop and after investigation, it was determined that the driver was in possession of marijuana, driving without a license, and driving while intoxicated by drugs. Vanessa A. Rochin, 18, of Sedalia, was arrested and transported to a hospital. Rochin was then taken to the Pettis County Jail for state charges of Driving While Intoxicated (Drugs), Possession of Marijuana, and Driving Without a Valid License. Rochin was held pending release to a sober person.

Friday night, a traffic stop was conducted near the intersection of West Broadway Boulevard and South Sneed Avenue for improper vehicle registration. During the stop, one Missouri license plate was seized from the suspect vehicle. The plate was placed into evidence holding, to be returned to the Department of Revenue.

Saturday evening, Officers responded to the Dollar General Store, 4215 East Broadway Boulevard, for a theft report. The staff on duty said a suspect came into the store that afternoon and took air fresheners from the store without paying. The business wished to pursue charges.

Sedalia Police were dispatched to the lobby of the Police Department Saturday morning for a report of fraudulent use of a debit card. Officers spoke with Jonathan Coster and his relatives. Coster reported that $994.69 had been charged on his Visa debit card without his authorization. The card company has been contacted, and 14 charges were reported to them as fraudulent. Charges were made from various states. There are no suspects at this time.

Officers performed a traffic stop on a black Kia as they recognized the driver to have a suspended driver's license. The traffic stop took place Saturday evening in the area of West Broadway Boulevard and South State Fair Boulevard. Officers spoke to the driver, and then performed a check through Dispatch, where his suspended status was confirmed. Nathan L. Riga, 30, of Sedalia, was arrested and transported to the Pettis County Jail. Riga was fingerprinted, photographed and released with a court date.

Friday night, Officers responded to the Break Time store, 318 West Broadway Boulevard, in reference to a subject passed out at the wheel holding a beer can. After an investigation, it was determined that the driver was intoxicated and had operated the motor vehicle. Brian K. Mumby, 41, of Sedalia, was placed under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated. Mumby was then transported to the Sedalia Police Department, released to a sober person, and issued a municipal citation with a court date.

Sedalia Police were dispatched to the Murphy USA, 3203 West Broadway Boulevard Saturday afternoon for a report of found property. The owner was contacted, and arranged for someone to come pick up the property.

On the afternoon of July 8th, The Sedalia Police Department's Crime Solution Unit conducted a vehicle stop at South Limit Avenue and West 3rd Street for a vehicle with expired registration. During the course of the stop, the driver was found to have an active arrest warrant out of Saline County for Failure to Appear on original charges of No Insurance. Whitney Keith Reynolds, 33, Homeless, was arrested without incident. During an inventory search of the vehicle prior to towing, several items related to drug activity were found along with property believed to be stolen. Information obtained during the investigation led to a search warrant of a motel room at the American Inn, 1217 South Limit Avenue. Additional stolen items were recovered, as well as more items related to drug activity. Two adults were placed under arrest without incident. Two juveniles in the room were turned over to the care of family. At the conclusion of the vehicle stop and search warrant, three individuals were transported to the Pettis County Jail. The case is still being investigated, and no further information was available in the report.

On the afternoon of July 10th, Sedalia Police responded to the 2700 block of West Broadway Boulevard for a reported trespassing. During the investigation, it was determined the suspect was wanted in connection to another trespassing incident that same day. Austin Robert Blankenship, 24, of Pettis County, was placed under arrest for trespassing. Blankenship resisted arrest and was subsequently tased using the drive stun. During a search incident to arrest, Blankenship was found to possess items related to drug activity. Blankenship was checked out by EMS and then transported to the Pettis County Jail pending formal charges of Possession of a Dangerous Drug, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and felony Resisting Arrest.

Friday night, Officers responded to the 1200 block of East 11th Street for a theft report. Maurica Williams reported the suspect had taken her push lawnmower on July 8th. The mower was worth $150 and Williams wished to pursue charges. A state charge of stealing was submitted to the prosecutor's office on the suspect.

Late Friday night, Officer responded to the area of East 4th Street and South Moniteau Avenue for a dog bite victim. The victim had injury and requested transport by PCAD to the Bothwell Regional Health Center. A dog bite report was completed.

Shortly after midnight Saturday night, Officers responded to the Cenex Gas Station, 120 East 16th Street, for a subject check. Officers made contact with Austin K. Bale, 23, of Sedalia, inside the gas station. Officers knew Bale to have two warrants for his arrest and two warrants for Failure to Appear. Bale's information was ran through Dispatch, the four warrants were confirmed from Sedalia and Pettis County. Bale was arrested and transported to the Pettis County Jail pending charges of Forgery, Stealing, Resisting Arrest, and Driving While Revoked. Bond was set at $9,000 cash or surety and $400 cash only.

Friday evening, Officers were dispatched to the Car Wash at 300 East 16th Street for a report of an attempted theft and property damage. A subject was seen on video attempting to break into the vacuums and attempting to break into a utility room. Later that night, the suspect was located in the 100 block of East 16th. Cody W. Hall, 25, of Otterville, was placed under arrest pending charges of Stealing and Property Damage in the 2nd Degree. Hall was transported to the Pettis County Jail, where he was placed on a 24 hour hold.

Saturday morning, a traffic stop was conducted in the 700 block of East Broadway Boulevard. Following an investigation, the driver was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. David D. Williams, 25, of Sedalia, was transported to the Sedalia Police Department, where he was processed and released with a court date.

Sedalia Police responded to the 1300 block of East 7th Street for a hit and run accident Friday morning. Upon arrival, Officers made contact with Jerry W. Jones, who stated his vehicle had been struck over night, causing damage to the rear bumper. Jones valued the damage to cost $700. Evidence was collected from the scene. At the time of the report, a suspect has not been located.

Friday afternoon, a victim came to the lobby of the Sedalia Police Department and reported that they had been scammed out of $500. Steven E. Ford explained that someone had contacted them by phone and told him he needed to pay $500 with a gift card, in order to avoid being arrested on an active warrant. Ford found out it was a scam after calling the Sheriff's Office to see if the warrant was still active. There is no suspect information at this time.

Friday afternoon, it was discovered that three catalytic converters were stolen from three different vehicles parked in the area of the 3800 block of South Limit Avenue. There are no suspects. The cost to replace the converters was estimated at $3,000.

Sedalia Police spoke with James Barnes Friday afternoon in reference to a trespassing report. Barnes stated that a male suspect entered the Wal Mart store, 3201 West Broadway Boulevard, after being issued a trespass warning in May of 2021. State charges of Trespassing in the 1st Degree are being sent to the prosecutor.
