As summer construction season begins to wind down, the Water Division wanted to give residents living in the 2018 Water Improvements Project Area (W. 2nd St. to W. 7th St. and S. Park Ave. to S. Ohio Ave.) a brief update on the status of the project.

The majority of the large water mains, 8” to 10” lines, have been installed in the area. The remaining large water mains to be installed during the first part of Oct. are located along W. 2nd St., W. 4th St. and W. 7th St. between S. Moniteau Ave. and S. Ohio Ave.

The balance of work will then involve flushing, sterilizing and testing the new mains to prepare for tying the new mains in to the water distribution system and then to residences. Less heavy equipment will be in the area as the boring of the large mains is completed. The large holes where mains were installed will begin being filled, the areas leveled and re-seeded to establish vegetation and sidewalks restored.

Residents should expect to see about the same number of construction workers in the area as the focus is on installation of service lines between the new mains up to the meter serving each home.

Residents have expressed concern about children participating in Halloween activities in the area. The contractor is making every effort to have the majority, if not all of the large holes, filled by Halloween. The City’s Water Division staff and the contractor will work together to assure safety is a top priority for the upcoming Halloween season and remaining work areas will be closely monitored.

The Water Division continues to plan for completion of the construction and installation of the water mains and service lines by the end of November. Replacement of all sidewalks and restoration of vegetation may be delayed until spring dependent on weather conditions.

The Water Division’s contractor is scheduled to complete work in the area of S. Park Ave. just north of the intersection with W. 2nd St. in the northbound lane on Mon. Sept. 30, 2019 beginning at 6:30 a.m. and continuing through 5:30 p.m. This block of S. Park Ave. will be restricted to one lane of traffic with heavy equipment and workers in the area as a water main is installed.

Additionally, on Mon., Sept. 30, 2019, beginning at 6:30 a.m. and continuing through Wed., Oct. 2, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. W. 4th St. is scheduled for work just east of the intersection at S. Quincy Ave. in the eastbound lane. This block of W. 4th St. will be restricted to one lane of traffic with heavy equipment and workers in the area as a water main is installed.
