Smith-Cotton High School vocal music students earned 28 “1,” or exemplary, ratings at the district vocal music competition held March 17-18 at State Fair Community College.

There were 14 students earning the top rating for their vocal solos, with eight receiving “1” as part of the New Score Mixed Double Quartet and four in the Beard Quartet; two more, Alex Beard and Andrew Poteet got top ranks for their piano solos.

Vocalists rated “1” included Alex Beard, Ethan Beard, Macy Broyles, Olivia Dailey, Emily Edwards, Breanna Hoover, Madison Lamb, Alyssa Lowe, Morgan Mateja, Avery Mather, Dalton Shepard, Logan Tatum, Kirsten Weller and Morgan Westphal.

The mixed double quartet was comprised of Aimee Carson, Zach Gerlach, Chandler Gray, Noah Hanson, Macey Hoover, Shepard, Tatum and Westphal. Making up the quartet were Alex, Brinton and Ethan Beard, along with Gabe Decker.

Earning “2,” or outstanding, ratings for their vocal solos were Gerlach, Gray, Hanson, Kobe Hawkins, Kandyn Hotsenpiller, Emma Lazenby, Alyssa Miller, Mackenzie Newell, McKenna Perusich, Helen Roerdanz, Cora Sadler, Hanna Scafe, Abigail Sipe, Ashely Webb and Bridget Young. Erin Emo and Marshall Noble received “3,” or satisfactory, for their vocal solos.

Individuals and groups earning "1” ratings will perform April 28 at the MSHSAA State Solo and Small Ensemble Festival at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
