Smith-Cotton’s Wiskur Scores 1,000th Career Point
Smith-Cotton High School senior Haley Wiskur became just the third Lady Tigers basketball player in school history to score 1,000 career points.
With a basket midway through the second quarter against Center High of Kansas City on Jan. 25 in the consolation final of the McDonald’s Classic tournament, Wiskur joined Donease Smith and Christian Sharp as the only Lady Tigers to reach the milestone. Wiskur’s 36-point outburst also tied her with Smith for the most points scored in a game by a Lady Tiger.
Wiskur, who has accepted an athletic scholarship to play basketball at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, entered the McDonald’s Classic needing 39 points to reach 1,000. She struggled in S-C’s tourney opener against Mt. Vernon, finishing with just six points.
“After the first game when things weren’t going that well, I knew it was going to happen when it happens so I needed to stop thinking about it so much,” she said. “Coach … told me, ‘Relax and play your game.’"
Wiskur scored 19 against Parkview to set up her historic performance against Center. Smith-Cotton Girls Basketball Head Coach Jessie Arnold presented Wiskur with the game ball after the win over Center.
“I’m really proud of her,” Arnold said. “I know there was a lot of pressure, everybody knew about it, there several people here to support her. I was really proud that she was able to do it at home."
Smith-Cotton Athletic Director Rob Davis praised called it “a wonderful accomplishment for Haley. She should take pride in knowing that her name will now be mentioned alongside Donease Smith and Christian Sharp as one of the best scorers in S-C girls basketball history."
Wiskur was still trying to put it all into perspective after the game.
“It’s crazy, I can’t wrap my head around it,” she said. “I couldn’t do this without my teammates, every team we have had. They get me the ball, it’s not one against five. I couldn’t do it without my team and coach."
