The Moon Will Look Bigger This Weekend

The first supermoon of the year will light up the sky this weekend, and it might also make walking your dog at night just a little bit easier.

So what's a supermoon? According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, "A supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the moon is at the closest point to earth in its orbit." This in turn makes the moon look larger than a normal full moon.

This full moon, being the second of the year, is also know as the Snow Moon. The St. Louis Post Dispatch citing the Farmer's Almanac as it's source says the name Snow Moon originated with northeastern Native American tribes because this moon falls during February, when there is usually heavy snow.

Personally, I like when the moon's out, bright and full. Especially when I'm walking my dog at night. It can be a real drag walking down the block on a cold, dark night. And by this time of year I've been doing this for about three months. Yeah, a nice moonlit night that brightens everything up a little. It makes a difference. I hope I don't forget to look up. That view is always amazing whatever type of moon it is.
