UPDATE:

The Johnson County Fire Protection District has been made aware that juveniles have been identified in connection with the October 20 fire at the Leeton United Methodist Church.

The fire was determined to be intentionally set, prompting a joint investigation led by the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office with assistance from the Johnson County Fire Protection District, Leeton Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Johnson County Fire Investigation Unit.

Fire Chief Larry Jennings expressed appreciation for the coordinated effort among agencies and the continued support from the Leeton community.

“This investigation moved forward quickly thanks to the expertise and cooperation of all involved,” Jennings said. “The Fire Marshal’s Office and our local law enforcement partners have worked closely together throughout this process, and we’re grateful for the professionalism shown by everyone working to find answers.”

The Leeton United Methodist Church, built in 1896, sustained significant damage in the fire but remains standing. Firefighters were able to preserve several items from inside the historic structure.

“The strength and resilience of Leeton have been evident since the night of the fire,” Jennings added. “This church has long been a gathering place, and that spirit will carry on.”

The Johnson County Fire Protection District appreciates the ongoing partnership among local, county, and state agencies throughout this investigation.

The names of the juveniles were not released.

Johnson County Fire Protection District firefighters were on the scene of a fire at the Leeton United Methodist Church, which broke out late last night.

The district confirmed that the fire was intentionally set, and an arson investigation led by the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office is under way.

Johnson County and Warrensburg Firefighters, both responded to the blaze, shortly after 9:15 p.m. Monday, to 106 North Wall Street in Leeton.

When crews arrived, heavy smoke and flames were visible from inside the 129-year-old church.

Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior and exterior attack, bringing the fire under control after nearly three hours. Despite extensive damage throughout the structure, the church remains standing, and crews were able to save some items from inside.

The Leeton United Methodist Church, built in 1896, has long served as a cornerstone of the Leeton community.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office conducted the initial investigation into the origin and cause of the fire with assistance from the Johnson County Fire Protection District, Leeton Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Johnson County Fire Investigation Unit. Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set, prompting a formal arson investigation.

“It’s heartbreaking to see a place that has stood for generations be deliberately set on fire,” said JCFPD Captain Joe Jennings. “This church isn’t just a building; it’s part of the history and identity of Leeton. Seeing it damaged in this way is difficult for the entire community.”
