Missouri Spring Storms-Is Your Homeowners Insurance Going to Cover The Damage?

Missouri Spring weather...you know we'll run the gambit of conditions in the upcoming weeks and over the next two-three months. After the round of weather we've had in the last couple of weeks I felt like it was a good idea to look over my homeowners insurance policy to make sure I have everything I need.

One of the big problems you could run into after a storm has to do with hail. It can cause damage to your roof and most of the time you don't even know it. Here's something else you may not know. Even though you have a homeowner's policy in place and you think you're good, you could wind up paying for a new roof if you don't have the right options.

According to the Department of Commerce and Insurance's Director, Chlora Lindley-Myers:

“Policies may not cover the replacement cost of your roof--your policy may only cover a depreciated cost, or the actual cash value, to repair or replace your property.”

So if you don't have replacement cost on your policy, you may want to change it. This could cause a change in your premium, and most likely, it will be an increase but it will be well worth when that day arrives that you need it.

If you're not familiar with what you have on your current homeowner's policy, get with your agent or an agent that can spend some time with you to go over the coverage.
