Pettis County Juneteenth: Honoring History, One Glazed Donut at a Time
Gentle Reader, there's something coming up this weekend that looks like it's going to be a total blast, so I have to let you know about it.
Juneteenth is coming up soon, and the Pettis County NAACP, the Juneteenth Committee, and the City of Sedalia are pulling out all the stops to celebrate it.
So what is Juneteenth?
Let's find out, or get a quick brush up.
So of course, it's a huge deal, and there's a big celebration happening here in Sedalia!

Alright, So What's Going On?
Well first, there's a little City Business first.
The City’s North Central Sidewalk Project Groundbreaking Ceremony will take place from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Shelter House #1 in Hubbard Park and at the corner of MLK Jr Drive and N. Missouri Avenue. This project is a major step toward improving accessibility and walk-ability in the North Central neighborhood, supported by a Missouri Community Revitalization Grant and City funds.
After the ceremony, the real party kicks off! From 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hubbard Park, community members are invited to a full day of Juneteenth festivities, fun, and probably a little friendly chaos.
There’ll be something for everyone: games, contests, a doughnut-eating competition (bring your stretchy pants), face painting, a bounce house for the kids (and maybe one overly enthusiastic adult), tug of war for bragging rights, a cornhole tournament for the competitive types, a dunk tank for justice, a cake walk for the sugar lovers, and plenty more surprises!
The soundtrack to your day will be spun by none other than DJ Tony Wilson “TP,” keeping the vibes high and the dance moves questionable. Feeling sporty? Join the 3-on-3 basketball or soccer tournaments—open to all age groups, with actual prizes that are not just “pride.” Oh, and don’t forget the giveaway, where you could win a 55″ TV big enough to make your living room feel like a movie theater.
Come hungry: food trucks and drink stations will be on-site, along with local vendors selling everything from handmade crafts to must-have snacks. It’s a full day of fun, flavor, and community spirit—no ticket required, just bring good energy (and maybe sunscreen).
Celebratorily yours,
Behka
