11-year-old Evan Leiss, a Tenderfoot with Boy Scout Troop 54, was recognized by Mayor John Kehde and the Sedalia City Council Monday night with a certificate of appreciation.

Leiss spotted a woman lying in her front yard on a cold night after dark on Feb. 11 as he was being driven to his weekly scout meeting at Celebration Center, along with his twin brother Gavin.

He notified his mother, Autumn Leiss, there was something wrong with what he saw, and she asked her husband Mike to return to the area to discover an Alzheimer's patient laying in the frozen grass. Authorities were then called and the woman quickly got the medical attention she needed from Sedalia Police, Sedalia Fire and PCAD. She was later transferred to Bothwell Regional Health Center.

Mayor Kehde presented Evan with a certificate of appreciation from the City of Sedalia. In fact, the rest of Troop 54 attended Monday night's meeting to witness Evan receive recognition and applause, followed by handshakes from Sedalia City Council members.

Cemetery Director Roger Waters recited the story to Council prior to the presentation. He said the woman would likely have suffered hypothermia had Evan not noticed something was wrong and said something about it.

Evan is the son of Autumn and Mike Leiss (pronounced Liss) of Sedalia.
