Homeless Man Faces Charges of DWR, Felony Possession
On the morning of Sept. 13, Sedalia Police conducted a traffic stop in the 900 block of South Barrett Avenue on a vehicle after observing its registration was expired.
The driver was found to have a Pettis County Warrant for his arrest. The warrant was issued in August of 2024 after an incident in June of 2024.
At that time, Officers conducted a traffic stop on South Park Avenue near West 3rd Street. The vehicle was stopped after making an improper right tum from Carr onto Broadway Street. The driver and passenger showed signs of excessive nervousness in comparison to the innocent motoring public. The driver granted consent to search the vehicle. In addition, K9 Tina was deployed, and she alerted to the odor of a controlled substance.
During the search, Officers located and seized a zippered pouch with drug paraphernalia in the form of small baggies for packaging narcotics for sale, a digital scale, and numerous used syringes. Officers also located and seized a baggy with approximately 1.4 grams of a white crystal substance that field-tested positive as methamphetamine. In addition, Officers located and seized a loaded hypodermic syringe with approximately 10-20 units of a clear liquid, suspected methamphetamine.
During a further search, Officers located a small pair of men's cargo shorts which appeared to be too small for the female driver. A pocket of the shorts contained a used hypodermic syringe with remnants of a liquid substance that field-tested positive as methamphetamine. During a mirandized interview with Connell at the scene, the passenger admitted to being a prior methamphetamine user, and also admitted to using with a needle.
Curtis Tolbert Connell Jr., 50, homeless, was arrested for his warrant on charges of felony Possession of a Controlled Substance and a new charge of Driving While Revoked.
Bond was initially set at $10,000 cash or surety on the drug charge. However, after the warrant was served on Sept. 17, Connell was released of his own recognizance.
Connell's OR bond was revoked on Sept. 26, after he was arrested again on charges of felony Possession of a Controlled Substance. Connell's case has been continued to Oct. 22, 2024.
